Uplighting Basics

Lights are strategically chosen and placed on the ground facing the wall or element of the room that should be highlighted. There are many variables to consider when creating your lighting package for your wedding event which include the wall color, height of the ceilings, spread of the beam and the overall lighting effect as it relates to the other lights in the room. Everything depends on the look you are creating, whether you want a focused beam of light, a diffuse spread of color, "a touch of blue or pink" or lighting entire walls, our lighting experts will work with you to acheive the look that will make your night unforgetable.

Types of Lighting Fixtures

LED Lighting

LED's or Light Emitting Diodes are state of the are in event lighting. They emit virtually no heat, have very saturated and deep colors and are easy to customize and control the way you want the light to appeas. These lights can recreate any color that a TV can do.

LED lights are made up of numerous red, green and blue individual LED lights that when projected in varying intensities blend together to create rich vibrant colors onto where thy are projected.

We here at TJ Uplighting of Michigan prefer the use of LED lights for your wedding reception because of their low energy usage. We are able to use many of these lighting fixtures in older reception hals with no issues witholder or newer electrical circuits. These can transform rooms that traditionally would be too burdensome or create too much trouble to run lights to properly light a room.

Traditional PAR Cans - Not Recomended

Traditionally the industry has used stage lights or "PAR Cans" for uplighting. These are bright white lights that have a "gel' or plastic film placed over the light front of the light to color the white light. These lights are limited to one color and get extremely hot. And can be dangerous to your wedding guests

If there are children or there isn't enough room to place these lights, guests can burn themselves. Theses lights also draw a lot of energy and can heat up small rooms quickly. Nothing is worse than being stuck in a room with extremely bright, hot lights.

The reason some mobile DJ's or Uplighting companys use these lights is because they are much more inexpensive than LED lights. The bulbs have a short life span and nothing is worse then having a light burn out durring your wedding reception. This not only ruins the lighting effect in the room, but can also be a safety concern with bulbs that shatter when they break because of the intense temperatures that they operate causing a disaster for your reception and the memories you will have for years to come

Uplighting Effects

Understanding what is possible with uplighting is extreamly helpful. Here are some basic effects that are achievable with uplighting

Washes of Color
The most popular effect is to provide washes of color or colors around the room. They can either be set to a static color or fade through colors at varying speeds.

As guests arrive and through dinner you may want a static color but you may wish to have the lights to slowly fade through the dancing portion of your wedding reception.

Beams of LIght
A focused beam of color or light on certain aspects of the room may be desired. Having beams of light to add more focus to specific features in the room or possibly focused on your wedding cake or disply table or to add drama to columns or aspects of the room will dramatically change the look of your wedding reception making it appear elegant and unique. Focused beams of light to the exits and entrances of the room can add exquisit detail for a grand enterance.

Dance Lighting
LED's can slowly fade through a number of colors, quickly change colors, strobe, or change to the beat of the music. Each of these effects add a unique effect to your wedding reception. Under Table LIghting
This effect looks really great with a bar or the head table. Having white linens surrounding the table and placing a lights under the table adds washes of color to the physical table in the room enhancing a boring table.

Architectural Uplighting
Lighting up the exit of the room or venue is a nice effect for your photos turning a boring enterence into a breath taking grand enterance. If you hare having a sparkler exit, have a really unique hotel, or otherwise would like to set the mood on the outside of the venue as well as the inside, placing LED lighting outside creates a very dramatic effect.
